9. January 2010: Restaurant Grendel 19

| January 10, 2010 | 0 Comments

The restaurant Grendel 19 is located close to the historic center of Lucerne, close to the Lake Lucerne and finally, close to Bucherer (where all the Japanese tourists go for jewellery shopping). It’s situated right there where a Mövenpick restaurant used to be.

When you enter the restaurant you’re warmly welcomed and after you’ve chosen your table to sit, you feel home and warm as the interior design is held in red and white. According to my memory of the former Mövenpick restaurant they’ve given each table a bit more space around and placed a few tables less – which gives you some more room to breath.

The waiter is extremly friendly and helpful. After bringing you the menu he’s taking your drink order right away and brings you your drinks within a few minutes. Although it took us quite long to take a choice the waiter wasn’t hurrying nor pressing to get the order done. We had the appropriate time we needed and finally, the order was taken.

The first course (a tomato soup) was served within around five minutes and was quite good. Although by being sick my nerves aren’t maybe as sensitive as they usually are, I’d still say, the soup was freshly made and rich.

It took the main course (fresh beef tartar with cognac) some time to come after the first course. Still, it was provided with toasted bread and butter and was quite rich. I’ve eaten better tartar in my life but it was quite okay. The arrangement of the dish wasn’t especially outstanding and could be improved in my opinion (especially when you compare the same dish with the picture on their homepage).

We were lacking some butter and toast which was brought right away after we caught the waiters attention to re-order. The only thing which was a bit disappoiting that it took quite some time to catch the waiters attention as he was always that focused on his current task that he didn’t pay too much attention to the next guests around him – a minor deficit which would – if improved – make him the almost perfect waiter.

The final course – the “Trendy Grendel” – a bowl of icecream with fresh fruit was very nice again. The only thing which appeared to be not 100% true seemed to be the fruit as some of them still were deep-frozen but I assume for being January and wanting to offer a decent to your clients.

In the end, the prices are back to “normal” – Switzerland – but still, for what you get offered at the Grendel 19, a price of CHF 120.00 for two people is absolutely in the range for two three-course-dishes. Definitely, a place I’d recommend to go.
