14. December 2012: Restaurant Am Aasee

A typical “Swabian cream tart with graved salmon” was served as a little appetizer after the orders were placed. And it was definitely a tasty start into the evening and the dinner.

Then, even a second amuse bouche was served – an “oyster with caviar and scalloped with champagne hollandaise”. Although not being a big fan of oysters, I must say the combination of the salty, the cheesy, and the creamy was absolutely great.

The restaurant has a specialty – if you are below 30 years, you get served three courses with accompanying wines for only EUR 30.00 per person – so I decided that I should give it a try. The first course was “poultry liver parfait in a pumpernickel coat and red and white tomato jelly and apple salad”. The liver parfait was somehow not very refined and the pumpernickel coat definitely gave it a special but very unusual taste. The white and red tomato jelly were a nice idea but did not really do any good – taste-wise. The apple salad on the other hand was great.

As a main course, an “Arctic char in a champagne beurre blanc and young spinach” was served. The dish was good – no question but lacked somehow in surprise. The same applies for the spinach – it was good but absolutely nothing special.

For desert, a rather big “ouef à la neige” was put on ou table. It was sweet, the sauce was good and tasty. Overall, the desert was fine but it was rather heavy.

Together with the double espresso (EUR 3.80) some cookies were served and they tasted pretty good. Overall, the dishes served were good but not outstanding but definitely above average. The prices are oustandingly fair – especially if you take the menu I mentioned above. The same applies for the drinks, e.g. bottle of water (0,75L) accounts for EUR 7.00.

The restaurant is located right next to the Aasee (Lake Aa) and, therefore, it is very atmospheric if you get a table right next to the windows so you get to look outside and enjoy the view – just beautiful. The service was great – very friendly, and very obliging. Only at the end, it took quite a while for them to actually bring the bill to our table.

All in all, the Restaurant am Aasee is a nice place to dine with good service and fair prices – and all in a very appealing atmosphere.
