28. January 2013: Restaurant Zunfthaus zum Löwen

A truly great dining experience is what you find at the Restaurant Zunfthaus zum Löwen – it starts with a “tandoori bread with lime oil”. The warm taste of curry fits astonishingly well with the lime oil.

The greeting from the kitchen kept expectations high – the “tomato foam terrine with a beef carpaccio” was smooth and intense in taste.

I decided to go for the 4-course menu (CHF 84.00) and the first course was already a blast. Making every doctor go crazy it was mouth-watering: “Duck liver terrine in a cassis coat and a ginger bread cracker, a grappa brioche with duck liver créme brûlée, duck liver with shallots served with a brioche”. The combination of the sweet of the cassis and the rich of the duck liver combined with the ginger bread cracker was delicious. The duck liver créme brûlée was luscious and last but not least the duck liver with shallots was superyummy.

Next was a selection of three different soups and again I must say they were absolutely breath-taking. The “curry soup with prawn foam and a prawn spit” was the best of them all but also the “poultry consommé with porcini ravioli” was amazingly good – I mean usually I consider consommés pretty boring but this one was definitely great. Last but not least the “pumpkin soup with chervil foam” was great too.

As good as it was so far, it kept going on. The main course was a “beef filet in a crispy coat with grilled scampi and chili hollandaise, vegetables and a potatoes and Jerusalem artichoke au gratin”. The beef was absolutely tender, the crispy coat was nice and the chili hollandaise was scrumptious! Also the potatoes and Jerusalem artichoke au gratin and the grilled scampi were definitely amazing!

As a last course a selection of different cheeses was served: “Gorgonzola, Brie, St. Galler Mountain Cheese, Manchego, Parmesan” accompanied by elder, fruit bread, fig mustard, a mustard fruit and chestnuts. The selection was nice and provided a fine ending to the dinner.

The place itself is very nice – it is a rather small restaurant but the atmosphere is cozy, comfortable, just very appealing. The prices are very fair for what you get – considering that the single courses if you do not take them as a menu are way more expensive, the menu is definitely the best choice. Also the prices for water are absolutely acceptable (e.g. 0,77L Allegra, CHF 7.50). While the waiter was somehow friendly and nice he was also unable to cope with the many tables he had – him alone – to serve. I mean, I do understand that you get stressed at some point if you are alone there to serve approximately 15 people with different requests and menus and all but reacting in an unfriendly way when e.g. my company ordered more of the side dish is as unprofessional as letting us wait like 20 minutes until we were able to place our order. Still, overall, I can absolutely recommend the Restaurant Zunfthaus zum Löwen!
