Worth coming for the mouth-watering starter: Restaurant Smith and de Luma (20. October 2020)

| October 24, 2020 | 0 Comments

I had paid a visit to the Restaurant Smith and de Luma a couple of times in the past (2017, 2020) and for me it has always been a safe bet in terms of quality of food and service. While one is still true, I’m not entirely signing the other part anymore. Once you’re seated and have placed your order, a “Parmesan foam” was served as an amuse bouche which was nice and also great because it was warm.

As a starter, I went for the “duo of Swiss beef: Tartar and Roasted Bone Marrow” (CHF 26.00) and while I’m usually not such a big fan of bone marrow, this was outstanding. You absolutely must try this. The bone marrow is cooked in the bone which is cut open in a way so you get quite a bit of that bone marrow. And the tatar which is put on top of the bone is hand-cut, therefore, a bit chunky but absolutely delicious. Frankly, this is one of the better starters one can order. And here, it’s definitely amazing. An absolute must in my opinion.

The “deer cheeks with spaetzle and red cabbage” (CHF 44.00) wasn’t able to reach the heights of the starter. While I liked the deer chesks in terms of consistency, they were definitely too dry and they had a very intense deer flavor. Of course, game often comes with its peculiar flavor but this one was almost overwhelming. So, as much as it was interesting, it is definitely not something I would order so soon again.

Still, the food is good and very enjoyable. And so is the atmosphere – I like the fact that the tables are placed apart and you have enough space for yourself and to the next table. And the atmosphere itself is also appealing. The only thing which definitely deteriorated since I’ve been here last is the service. I’m not saying it’s bad but it is less attentive (we had to repeat our orders twice, things were served the other way round, and we had to ask twice for a new bottle of water) which is a pity as good service is something you remember and also makes you come again. I mean, I will still come here as the food is great (especially that starter!) but I really hope they’ll be able to improve their service quality again.
