An absolutely hidden gem with a not so easy to find entrance: Hannelore – Bar & Living Room (10. April 2023)

One of the group recommended the Hannelore and while I found the name hilarious, I also figured that it’s interesting to discover a new bar – especially since there used to be another restaurant in exactly the same spot called ‘Blue Mustard’, which I had visited back in 2016.

Let’s say, you need to know how to enter the Hannelore. From the outside, there are two black doors which have no name on them, so you just have to walk in confidently and suddenly, you are in a very different setting.

Once you’re inside, you get to try a variety of cocktails – some of which better than others, but all good. The “Tropical Madness (Ketel One Vodka, raspberry pulp, lemon juice, vanilla, ginger ale)” (EUR 16.00) was smooth and good, and the way the drink was prepared, it was super easy to drink, since they mixed it in a way that you couldn’t really taste the alcohol.

The “Raspberry Thyme Smash (Tanqueray Gin, lemon juice, sugar syrup, raspberry, thyme)” (EUR 16.00) was a bit more on the intense side and had a bit more edges than the first drink.

The “Delicious (Ketel One Vodka, cinnamon, cassia, fresh lemon, fresh cucumber)” (EUR 16.00) was quite nice. Refreshing and light, the perfect third drink of the evening.

Since the drinks are mixed in a way that they are easy to drink, it is good to get some nibbles on top. We went for the “truffle fries (fries, truffle oil, truffle mayo)” (EUR 7.50) and the “schnitzel bites (baked chicken stripes, wild cranberry, lemon)” (EUR 9.50), which was great to balance off the booze of the drinks, but was definitely no culinary revelation!

What I truly loved about the place was its interior – especially after you’ve entered from the very non-appealing outside, it’s kind of stunning.

There are some niches, which are definitely great to sit down and enjoy. But as you can see, you need to book in advance, as else you will end up at the bar (or be the first customers of the evening, so you’re getting lucky to get a table).

I especially liked the tree in the bar – just so nice and refreshing!

All in all, to me, the Hannelore is definitely one of the better bars I’ve been to lately. So, when you’re in Vienna, I think it’s definitely worth paying this place a visit. Book a table in advance to be on the safe side!
