I started the blog in October 2009, while living in Milan which I definitely consider to be one of the food capitals of the world. I was in touch with food since my early childhood (as my father is a former chef). Whenever I can, I travel the world to discover new places, to meet people but mostly to try local dishes and to find hidden gems! If you know a place worth going, please drop a line to: info@thediningexperience.org.
Currently, I am a member of the following food-related associations: Chevalier @Chaîne des Rôtisseurs Zurich-Ville; Membre Gourmet Dégustateur @Ordre Mondial des Gourmets Dégustateurs [OMGD]; Gesellschafter @Goldener Fisch and Member @Slowfood Convivium Zurich City.

Traditional Japanese breakfast is not really my thing: Ekoin Temple (13. March 2020)

I was a bit skeptical about the breakfast as it contained quite a bit of things which I was not able to identify respectively which do not really fit into a breakfast in my personal opinion. But – considering the rice which you get with it – you have enough differently tasting things which make […]

A truly traditional Japanese temple dinner experience: Ekoin Temple (12. March 2020)

When you visit Koya-san, I can definitely recommend you to stay in a temple run by monks (there are many up there) like the Ekoin Temple. The whole concept is that you basically stay in a way Japanese people (and monks especially) live(d). So, you cannot wear outdoor footwear inside, you are sleeping in one […]

When Google Translate helps you to order food: Restaurant Matumuro (本マグロと季節料理 魚菜まつむろ) (11. March 2020)

Finding a restaurant which offers something in English isn’t easy in Nara. We tried about five places and all of them basically made it clear to us that we weren’t really welcome if we didn’t speak Japanese – which was done in a very polite manner just showing us the hand-written menu in Japanese (which […]

Japanese tea ceremony in a traditional setting: Machiya Cafe Kanna (11. March 2020)

After all sights which were on the top list of to dos were done, it started raining, which was just the perfect moment to make a little pause and rest at the Machiya Cafe Kanna as they offer nice tea sets with sweet nibbles. I went for the “Japanese black tea set” (880 Yen) which […]

Delicious sushi where you wouldn’t expect it: Restaurant Izasa-Nakatani-hompo Yumekaze-hiroba (11. March 2020)

When you visit Nara, respectively the Nara park, you either have to eat something before you go there or you should visit the Izasa-Nakatani-hompo Yumekaze-hiroba restaurant. There are a few restaurants around but if you look at the reviews, none of them looked like I would feel comfortable visiting any of them. The Izasa-Nakatani-hompo Yumekaze-hiroba […]

A Japanese restobar experience with a twist: Restaurant Utogaria (10. March 2020)

There are so many restaurants in Osaka, it’s really not easy to find one which stands out but the Utogaria seems to be a safe address for all tourists. When we got there, there were already other foreigners sitting at the long bar and eating their dinner. We went for “deep fried dumplings” (450 Yen) […]

A Japanese version of French cuisine: Restaurant À La Civette (10. March 2020)

When you slept in and are up too late to actually get the breakfast at the hotel and you just randomly try to find a place which offers food with an English menu, then you might be unlucky in the neighborhood of Konmachi. After some time, I stumbled upon the À la Civette which was […]

Decent welcome drink for Platinum guests: Moxy Café @ Moxy Osaka Honmachi (9. March 2020)

If you are a Marriott Bonvoy Gold member or above, you receive a little welcome gift in form of a drink voucher – I decided to cash mine and went for their local drink called “Cassis Orange” which was basically a mix of some cassis liquor and orange juice. And it was surprisingly tasty – […]
