19. July 2014: Ristorante Cantina della Vetra

| August 15, 2014 | 0 Comments

I have been to the Ristorante Cantina della Vetra already a couple of times (1. June 2010, 6. June 2010, and 29. May 2011) but the last time was more than three years ago. I was looking forward to visit again.

I started with “fresh goat cheese with pistacchios crumble, Sardinian bread and peach salad” (EUR 12.00; “Caprino fresco con crumble di pistacchi, pane carasau e insalata di pesche”). While the combination of the fresh cheese with the pistacchios was pleasant and the peaches did their part to complete the dish, the salad was a bit dull.

As a primo piatto I went for the “orecchiette with basil sauce and zucchini flowers” (EUR 14.00; “Orecchiette als pesto di basilico con zucchine in fiore”). The orecchiette were tasty and of a good consistency – the pesto was very intense but was leveled out perfectly by the zucchini flowers.

The secondo piatto was “smoked swordfish carpaccio with rasperry salad” (EUR 18.00; “carpaccio di pesce spada affumicato con insalatina e aspretto di lamponi”) and I must say I was a bit disappointed by the taste of the swordfish. In all fairness, it is probably not the smartest thing to eat fish in a city which is far away from the sea – still, the slight fishy tasty of the carpaccio was a bit of a disappointment while the idea of the dish is actually lovely as the combination of the salad and the raspberries’ sweetness is incredibly tasty.

The accompanying wine this evening was a bottle of “Amarone della Valpolicella, 2009, Costasera, Masi” (EUR 42.00) which was good as always. The prices are absolutely fair for what you get, this applies to the dishes even more than the beverages – but also there, nothing to complain about (bottle of water, EUR 3.00; double espresso, EUR 4.00).

What I really like about the Ristorante Cantina della Vetra is the atmosphere – the place is absolutely lovely, somehow it has a very traditional interior, it is a bit dark, but incredibly atmospheric. The service is excellent – the waitress was very friendly and was there most of the time when you needed her.

Shortly before leaving, I had the chance to talk to Giacomo, one of the co-owners of the restaurant to learn that the Cantina della Vetra already exists for more than a decade – and to be offered two different grappe – quite high proof but astonishingly flavourful. The Cantina della Vetra remains among my favourite restaurants in Milan! I’ll be back!
