22. March 2011: Restaurant Hofbräuhaus
World-famous (at least in Munich) – the place to go if you’re a tourist or like loud places. But more important, the food is not too bad either. I went for the “Original Hofbräuhaus brewmaster steak from the pig with steamed onions and scallopped cream potatoes” (EUR 8.90) and ordered two mixed dumplings (EUR 1.90) on the side. The brewmaster steak is not the best meat really but the sauce and the spice makes the whole thing pretty tasty. The potatoes which came with it are okay but a bit boring in taste.
The two dumplings had a large amplitude compared to each other when it came to taste. The dark one on the picture was pretty boring and not too tasty. The white one on the picture was really good – definitely recommendable! So, the dishes are pretty tasty and especially for what you pay, the food is good. What must be said though, although the portions are still quite okay, they are not as big as normally in Germany. Not that they would have to but it was somehow surprising at first.
A liter of beer costs EUR 6.90 which is also pretty decent. The waiter is quick and as friendly as he has to be but looking at how big that place is and how many people there are, the service is pretty okay.
When it comes to the atmosphere, I guess, opinions diverge heavily. Personally, it was a place I had to go once because it’s that famous but I don’t think I’ll end up there many more times. Somehow, it is too packed, way too loud to actually have a conversation and the atmosphere itself is not too appealing really. If you’re new to Munich or here as a tourist, go once, it’s a must-have-been-one-time-while-I-am-in-Munich – but that’s about it.
Not so far from the Restaurant Hofbräuhaus is the Restaurant Valentin-Stüberl, or the Caffè Luigi Tambosi im Hofgarten.
