20. April 2011: Restaurant Frank’s Amici

| April 22, 2011 | 0 Comments

Frank Bergmeyer is the owner of the Restaurant Frank’s Amici which you would assume is an Italian restaurant (amici is Italian for “friends”). But it’s way more than that. But, step by step. We arrived and immediately found a table inside as most people were sitting outside. When we asked to eat something the waitress told us she would get the menu soon – and well, it took her quite a while but that was because there was no classical menu card, there was much more a chalkboard on which the menu was written.

Right after we’ve ordered Frank came to our table and offered us raspberry schnapps he had imported the day before from South Tyrol. Just like that – no extra charge or anything, just for free as a starter.

We got served chickpeas, olives, and bread before the dishes. The olives were good, the chickpeas interesting (I’ve never had them just like that as an appetizer) but the bread was truly amazing – it was bread which had a consistency like pie somehow but was refined with sea salt and tyhme. Absolutely tasty!

As a starter I had “Grilled Salsiccia on Polenta cream” (EUR 5.50) which tasted absolutely great. The polenta was coarse-grained, the salsiccia was tasty and great in combination with the polenta. Additionally, there was a wild garlic sauce on the plate and the cherry tomato was great in taste – sweet and great in combination with polenta.

What was not really great though was that we’ve ordered for three people and we only got it served for two – the waitress apologized several times and said that was because of the stress. Well, fine, but still, it shouldn’t happen, especially when we’re the only ones eating at that time of the night! That cannot be that stressful!

So, while two of us were having their starter, one had his main course, and then we changed. Although she apologized quite a few times, it’s still an absolute no go.

As a main course I had “Entrecote with baked potatoes, wild garlic butter and rucola tomato salad” (EUR 19.40). The entrecote itself was good, the meat was tender and exactly how it had to be. The baked potatoes were not really good, the wild garlic butter was completely missing (I suppose it landed accidently on the starter plate, which fit there pretty good too). The salad was pretty good – fresh and tasty.

A bottle of water (0,75L; Valser) costs EUR 5.20 and a bottle of Lagrein red wine EUR 33.00 (pretty good one actually).

When I have to judge on the food, I can not exactly say how I would judge: The bread was amazing, the starter was really great too, but the main dish was comparatively disappointing, not bad but disappointing.

The service was friendly but as described above, there is definitely room for improvement. Looking at the fact that noone besides us was eating, it cannot be that the waitress is not able to actually take the correct order!

In any case, the atmosphere in the restaurant is nice as it is simple but classic and modern. The dishes are quite good – the starter was absolutely fabulous, the bread was great, and the main dish was somewhat disappointing. I guess if the chef would have more time or “not be stressed”, it would definitely be great – all of it.

At the end, we got an apricot schnapps from the waitress as an apology which was also quite good but not as good as the raspberry one.

The prices not really low for Germany but still more than fair for what you actually get. So, overall, I would say, the Restaurant Frank’s Amici is a great place to go. The dishes are really good (at least some are extraordinary), the atmosphere is nice, the service has room for improvement but is really friendly, and the prices are fair for what you get. Additionally, if you’re lucky enough, you might meet Frank Bergmeyer himself – and he definitely is one of a kind!

Close to the Restaurant Frank’s Amici you can find other restaurants and bars like the box food & wine bar, the Trachtenvogl Lounge, the Restaurant Königsquelle, or the Restaurant Zum Goldenen Kalb.
