24. March 2011: Restaurant Zum Goldenen Kalb

A-W-E-S-O-M-E! That’s the best description for the meat you get served in the restaurant Zum Goldenen Kalb. The beef tatar with chips I had as a starter (EUR 12.50) was absolutely delicious. The meat tastes great, is tender, soft and rich in taste – although the chips on top of the tatar are a bit weird at first sight, they somehow provide the thing with a little extra. The taste doesn’t really change with them but it gives each bit a little hint of crunchiness which makes it pretty interesting which you’re usually not used to with tatar. My company had a “Beef Tea” (EUR 7.50) as a starter which is basically just a beef consomée but it is not just a beef consomée – it’s much more probably the best one I’ve had in my entire life. The taste of beef is intense without bein overwhelming or intrusive, it still has pieces of meat in it and is just a really great tasting sound thing!

What is truly amazing, awesome, stunning, delicious (and so on) is the Irish beef filet. The small portion is 200gr (EUR 28.00) and let me say, it is extremly delicious and absolutely tender. Although the piece of meat is quite thick (between 3 and 4 cm) you can cut it in half with your knife by basically just putting the knife on top of the filet and just sliding across it without putting much pressure on it. The beef came exactly as ordered – neither “under-” nor overcooked. And believe me, this meat is absolutely delicious. What was even more surprising on the side – because somehow you expect from a steakhouse that the meat served is pretty tasty, although – to be honest – not that tasty – is the fact that the vegetables which came with the filet were delicious too. They weren’t overspiced but had the original taste of the respective vegetable – a dream coming true!

Also, the prices for the drinks are quite moderate being EUR 3.50 for half a litre of beer and EUR 3.50 for a double espresso. So, looking at the dishes and drinks and the respective prices, I must say: The restaurant Zum Goldenen Kalb is definitely a great place to go to – you should absolutely go if you have the possiblity to, it’s more than worth it!

The place is also pretty nice – it is a great combination of a modern furniture and interior design combined with the old stone walls and the somehow dark ambiente. Also, as apparently the place is the new to-be-seen-in steakhouse of the city, the crowd is pretty cool. My friend told me that the Restaurant Zum Goldenen Kalb is the new place to be seen in. Which also was kind of confirmed by the owner. We hadn’t reserved a table and when we walked it and asked for a table he told us that we had to wait at least 20 minutes – otherwise they’re booked out for the next three days. With that we were absolutely okay. What was pretty weird/fun/surprising then was that a table got free after about 3 minutes, and they had it cleaned up after about 5 – and still, we had to wait for at least another 15 minutes until we got the table – it was pretty much just showing that he didn’t need us as guests but could afford to leave the table empty – that’s Munich.

After that, the waiter was very friendly – it helped that we had the language in common – Italian. The dishes were served rather quick, and the entire time the waiter was there rather quick although the place was still pretty crowded and he stayed friendly during the whole time.

Overall, I can only say: If you’re either booking a table in advance or have some time to wait, you won’t be disappointed by going to the Restaurant Zum Goldenen Kalb – it’s more than worth it!!!

Close to it are Restaurant Valentin-Stüberl, the Restaurant Hofbräuhaus, the Restaurant Königsquelle, and the box food & wine bar.
