Dining with Bruno and Giacomo: Restaurant Schützengasse (18. May 2016)

| July 21, 2016 | 0 Comments

I have been to Schützengasse a couple of times for lunch (9. May 2016, 19. October 2015, 14. October 2015, and 28. June 2013) but never for dinner. Finally, I managed to pay a visit for dinner.

I started with a “spinach salad with egg, bacon and pine nuts with a honey balsamic dressing” (CHF 14.50) which did not only look appealing but was great in its simplicity. Usually, I am no big fan of spinach as salad but I was actually positively surprised. When it comes to the dressing, it could be a tiny bit more intense for my personal gusto though.

When it came to ordering dishes, respectively, choosing dishes, not everybody was as lucky as I was – at first, some of us wanted a “bone marrow” dish only to be informed that they had run out of it. Given, they had to pick something else, they kind of changed their whole menu and wanted “veal liver” – well, also out of that. On one hand this is obviously kind of annoying but speaks, on the other hand, very much for itself, respectively the restaurant owner as the products served are fresh. The waiter, Giacomo as well as the owner, Bruno, both came to our table to explain the situation. Highly appreciated! Plus, Bruno managed to “steal” one small piece of liver from another customers plate (in the kitchen obviously) to give it to the one of our party who had ordered the liver. What a gesture!

Personally, I went for the “veal cordon bleu, 300gr” (CHF 44.50) with “risotto” (CHF 6.50) as a side dish and I must admit that it was actually absolutely tasty. While the cordon bleu looked rather small it was actually quite a big portion and it was juicy meat with the perfect stuffing of cheese! And the risotto was not too creamy (like you very often get it) but perfectly cooked! Chapeau!

The inside of the Schützengasse is atmospheric still but also rather simple – but it makes you feel comfortable although it gets very hot in the evening, also very crowded and respectively loud. Great if you are out with a group of friends in order to enjoy the evening but probably not the best location for a “serious talk” or if you want to get to know the other person as it is just too loud. However, all in all, the experience at the Restaurant Schützengasse is a good one – also in the evening. Good food, very friendly personnel, fair prices, and a good atmosphere.
