23. October 2010: Restaurant La Gondola
The Restaurant La Gondola is located on the first floor of a building at the Weinmarkt. You won’t see the entrance right away so you have to look for it and get up the stairs. In its near vicinity is the Lounge @Hotel des Balances as well as some restaurants like the Restaurant zum Weissen Kreuz [29. May 2010 | 15. October 2010], the Restaurant Tandoori Indian Take Away, or the Restaurant Opus [6. April 2010 | 4. May 2010 | 20. July 2010 | 7. September 2010 | 5. October 2010 | 22. October 2010]. The restaurant is easily reachable by a short walk from the Lucerne main station.
The inside of the restaurant is nice. The walls are painted with typical motives from Venice (gondolas, who would have guessed so). Otherwise, the decoration is okay but not too special.
The waiter was very friendly and amusing (as he was switching between French, Italian and German all the time and mixing it up at different tables). Also, he recommended the daily lunch menu and suggested me – when I had decision issues – to combine the Saltimbocca with the noodles. So, I decided to get that.
First, I got a mixed salad which was quite good. The sauce had some garlic though – not that this was a problem but I think you should warn your customers if you serve them garlic.
The saltimbocca was good, and the noodles were tasty too. What was not soo good though were the vegetables as they had way too much olive oil on them. The same applies to the meat – somehow there was way too much oil on the plate.
The price is quite okay. The menu cost CHF 19.50, half a litre of water CHF 5.7 and a double espresso CHF 5.50. When I asked for the bill in the end, it took them a bit too long to actually bring it to my table.
I’d say the Restaurant La Gondola is a good place to go and have lunch. It’s not an especially fancy place but the food is okay and fair in price. The waiter is funny and friendly, and all in all reliable and quick.
