No matter in which city, always a reliable and good choice for meat: Restaurant Ojo de Agua Berlin (23. April 2022)

Since I have been to most of Dieter Meier’s restaurants that I know of (Ojo de Agua Frankfurt, Ojo de Agua Zurich, Bärengasse Zurich, Brassiere Freilager (back when he owned it)) but not the Ojo de Agua in Berlin, I decided to give it a try and had booked a table for the evening. It started with “four beef empanadas” (EUR 16.00) which were a special of the day and which were highly enjoyable. They were smooth (a little doughy) and had a lovely, tasty filling. In combination with a bit of lemon squeezed into them, it made for a perfect bite.

The “beef tartar, hand cut (200gr)” (EUR 22.00) which was my second starter was good in terms of texture – hand-cut, a bit chunky, but smooth and nicely seasoned.

The tartar is served with nicely toasted bread and good butter, which works perfectly with the tartar. So, for the starter, it was absolutely perfect.

I wanted to go for the Bife de Chorizo (roast beef) which they had run out of for that day – which was a bit of a disappointment. So, I had to go for the “Bife de Lomo (200gr)” (EUR 38.00) since they do not really have many options on the menu. And I do not regret it since the meat is super aromatic, tender, and perfectly cooked. In combination with the sauce they serve it with – no clue what it is – it makes a perfect bite! I absolutely loved the sauce!

The “potatoes au gratin” which come with the main (and usually cost EUR 6.00) were a bit of a disappointment, though. Some of them were still semi-raw, and it didn’t really taste like much, but at least they had a nice cheese covering.

What was the funniest thing was the wine I tried. The “Malo, 2016, Dieter Meier, Mendoza ‘Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot'” (EUR 85.00) (which means ‘bad’ in Spanish) was great as a wine. The fact that with the first pour into the wine glass, a drop of red wine run down and over the label of the bottle, so it made the “mad woman” crying a blood tear, made it hilarious though.

All in all, Dieter Meier’s restaurant ensure consistency in delivery across countries. No matter in which Ojo de Agua you go, the food is absolutely delicious, the place is simple but authentic and atmospheric, the prices are not cheap but fair, and the service does a good job. And as always, I would recommend you to book a table in advance.
