27. January 2011: Restaurant Kindli

| January 30, 2011 | 0 Comments

The Restaurant Kindli is a well-known restaurant to eat good and sound meals. The variety of dishes is only limited but what you can choose from the menu is definitely tasty. It already starts with “flutes” which are served right away and are light and tasty. They perfectly fit with a glass of white wine (Pinot Grigio) to start a decent dinner.

For a starter I had “Marinated Tuna with Avocado and Cilantro” (CHF 25.00) which was really tasty. The tuna was tender and the marinated crust gave it the extra edge. Also, the avocado with cilantro tasted good but compared to the tuna it was too much (the amount) and almost tended to overweight the taste of the tuna. Also, the avocado with the cilantro (and it’s the second making the difference) is quite intense but still works fine with the tuna.

As a main dish, I had “Filet of Beef with roasted Mushrooms and Risotto” (CHF 58.00 for 200 gr). Truly speaking, it was just about great. The beef was Premium Bio Beef “Ojo de Agua” from Dieter Meier’s hazienda in Argentina and once more the meat was absolutely tender, soft, and rich in taste (like always when I’ve had Ojo de Agua like in the Restaurant Latino in the Astoria Hotel, Lucerne or in the Restaurant Bärengasse). The sauce with roasted mushrooms was good and fit with the very well-made risotto.

The desert, a “Crème Brûlée with Passion Fruit and Mango” (CHF 16.00) was good but somehow the crème was too liquid compared to a regular vanilla crème brûlée. In taste though, it was good. The passion fruit overwhelmed the whole thing a bit but still the idea of a crème brûlée with passion fruit and mango is definitely something interesting.

For the main course we had a bottle of Passo Doble (2008) from Masi Tupungato (for CHF 48.00) which is quite good and fair in price (if you have it in a restaurant – I saw the bottle for CHF 11.20 on www.bindellaweine.ch which somehow makes you think if you should just have wine at home as you 4 bottles of the same wine for the same price). Nevertheless, the wine was good in taste and fit perfectly with the beef filet.

The waiter is friendly and helpful, is able to take the orders and actually bring what you’ve ordered. Also, he manages to bring all the dishes more or less at the same time (but had a little mixup with the side dishes of some colleagues of mine). Also, special requests are handled well and without any hazzle. Only towards the end, the waiter got a bit annoying subtly trying to recommend us to leave.

The atmosphere is okay, as it is bright (depending on where you sit actually a bit too bright) and with the combination of wood and white tablecloths it looks somewhat classy. In addition, the tables are somewhat close to each other and, therefore, privacy is not really a given.

Looking at what you pay for what you get one has to say it is not really cheap but it’s definitely worth it as the dishes are really tasty and the prices are still pretty fair.

Overall, the Restaurant Kindli is a great restaurant to go and have dinner: The dishes are great, the atmosphere is pretty nice, the waiter is competent and friendly and the prices are high but fair. It’s not the top-notch but definitely upper middle-class in quality. If you’re in Zurich, it’s definitely worth going!

To get to the restaurant Kindli is pretty easy as it is easily reachable on foot from the main station Zurich and the Paradeplatz Zurich. In its vicinity are quite a few places like the Restaurant Churrasco, the Restaurant Bü’s (23. August 2010 / 2. December 2010), the Restaurant Bärengasse or bars like the Widder Bar, or the Bar @Carlton Hotel.
