1. February 2011: Restaurant Opus

A great combination of tasty dishes combined with a nice selection of good wines describes the event of the Winepalaver with Austrian wines best. As a starting wine we had a “Riesling Stoaraun, Weingut Ernst Frischauf, 2009 (CHF 16.00)” which was quite okay but lacked a bit in volume. The amuse bouche which was served to the first wine was a little piece of potato cake with a cap made of dried tomato and creme fraiche which tasted great. Especially the combination of dried tomato with the light creme fraiche gives it the little special taste.

As a second wine we had a “Sauvignon blanc, Hochsulz Skoff, 2009 (CHF 32.00)” which was first – if you drink it without any food on the side – pretty disappointing but after some time when it had some more air and you had something to eat on the side, it really gained volume and taste. Definitely a good white wine! The third white wine for the starter, the “Grüner Veltliner, Der Ott, Bernhard Ott, 2007 (CHF 27.50)” is pretty tasty without anything to eat on the side but looses against the Sauvignon blanc if it is accompanied by a dish.

The starter was a spinach curd torte and lamb’s lettuce. The tart was good but not overwhelming and the lamb’s lettuce was definitely missing its salad sauce. Only a slight hint of olive oil could be found on the salad.

For the main dish, we got four different red wines: 1) “Blauer Zweigelt Classic, Josef Pöckl, 2008 (CHF 22.50)”, 2) “St. Laurent Zantho, 2007 (CHF 17.50)”, 3) “Cuvée Leithaberg, Weingut Nehrer, 2003 (CHF 32.00)” and 4) “Zweigelt Prädium, Scheiblhofer, 2008 (CHF 35.00)”. Personally, I really liked the “Cuvée Leithaberg” as it had volume, was rich in taste and had some kind of length.

Also, it fit really good with the “Wiener Schnitzel with potato salad and cranberries” and the Wiener Schnitzel was pretty good this time and also had a decent size. The potato salad was good, the cranberries pretty regular.

The desert wine was a “Beerenauslese Umathum, 2004 (CHF 23.00)” which was good but way too sweet for me – but to be fair, I’m not a huge fan of desert wine. The desert itself though, vanilla icecream with pumpkin seed oil and caramelized pumpkin seeds tasted amazing. The mixture of pumpking oil and the vanilla icecream was absolutely great!

All in all, the selection of wines was pretty good and fit the dishes pretty well. The dishes were absolutely tasty and were rich in flavour. All in all, it is really recommendable to go there once to try out a Winepalaver with Gunther Picker – a nice selection of different wines with 4 courses for the decent price of CHF 65.00.

The waitresses are friendly and helpful and very nice. Also, the service is good and quick. The ambiente is nice and inviting as the little room provides you with a feeling of privacy. All in all, it is really inviting.

If you’re interested in knowing more about the Winepalaver you should check out the homepage of the Restaurant (see below) or have a look at some other Winepalaver reviews (Top Shots, Wine & Dine Piemont, Tuscany, Spain, Summer, Gambero Rosso 2 e 3 biccheri, and Austria).
